The pattern of increasing population, vehicle ownership, and vehicle miles traveled necessitates the need for various road improvements and new construction. Increasingly congested roadways are causing the need for widening, repaving, structural repairs, and construction of new routes to detour traffic from congested areas. Transportation Demand Management (TDM) strategies, on the other hand, attempt to deal with congestion by making better use of existing facilities, at times, reducing single occupant vehicle travel. One such strategy is making bicycle travel a more convenient and realistic alternative to automobile use.
MCAG currently has a Regional Bicycle Plan and assists the cities in creating more specific bicycle plans for their area.
